Diflucan is a triazole antifungal drug intended for systemic oral therapy of various types of yeast infections. This antimycotic is active against a wide range of pathogenic fungi, causing infectious diseases.

Diflucan is highly effective in treating yeast infections caused by Candida or Cryptococcus. It is prescribed to adults, children and infants older than two weeks for antifungal treatment of:

  • Onychomycosis
  • Dermatomycosis
  • Coccidioidomycosis
  • Different types of candidiasis

Diflucan can be used to treat cryptococcal meningitis, including as an alternative to the antifungal agent Amphotericin. In addition, Diflucan is prescribed for the prevention or treatment of opportunistic fungal infections in patients, weakened by:

  • Chemotherapy
  • Surgical procedures
  • Immune deficiency

Diflucan helps cure fungal infection by inhibiting the synthesis of the cell wall of the causative agents. Due to the powerful fungistatic effect, it causes death of the fungus and prevents its reproduction.

This antifungal is manufactured and sold by Pfizer Company since 1992. Its active ingredient is Fluconazole. Today, Diflucan is sold in several different dosage strengths and forms with different routes of administration.

Patients, who were diagnosed with a fungal infection, can buy Diflucan in the form of:

  • Intravenous infusion of 2 mg/ml
  • Hard gelatin capsules of 50 mg, 200 mg
  • Film-coated tablets of 50 mg and 100 mg
  • Powder for oral suspension of 50 mg/5 ml

Diflucan tablets, capsules or suspension are preferred for antifungal therapy. However, due to the content of lactose and glucose, they are not recommended for patients with chronic food intolerance to these carbohydrates.

In esophageal and/or swallowing disorders, patients should use solution for infusion instead of the oral dosage forms of Diflucan. Intravenous infusions should be administered slowly, at a rate of 200 mg/hour.

For the therapy of vaginal candidiasis, Diflucan 150 mg suspension, tablets or capsules should be used once. The effective dose regimen of this antimycotic for the treatment of other yeast infections is selected on the basis of:

  • age and/or weight of the patient,
  • sensitivity and type of pathogenic fungi.

On the first day of the antifungal therapy, a double dose of Diflucan should be used. The maximum daily dose of this antimycotic is 400 mg. It is effective for the treatment of systemic fungal infections or cryptococcal meningitis.

The average daily dose of Diflucan for the treatment of oral or yeast infections in adults is 100 mg. In urogenital infections, patients can take 50 mg to 200 mg of this antifungal per day.

The initial dose of this antimycotic for treatment of oropharyngeal or esophageal candidiasis in children is 6 mg/kg. To continue the antifungal therapy, children should take half the initial dose of Diflucan.

Pediatric patients with cryptococcosis should take Diflucan 12 mg/kg on the first day of therapy. The pediatric dose of this antifungal for further treatment is 6 mg/kg per day.

This antimycotic can interact with certain immunosuppressants, anticonvulsants, antibiotics or oral bronchodilators. Diflucan dose adjustment may be required when used concomitantly with:

  • Theophylline
  • Hydrochlorothiazide
  • Rifabutin or Rifampicin
  • Cyclosporin or Tacrolimus

Due to the high risk of cardiovascular adverse reactions caused by potential drug interactions, Diflucan is contraindicated in combination with Astemizole, Erythromycin, Terfenadine, Quinidine, Cisapride or Pimozide.

Pregnant women with severe yeast infections may be advisable short-term use of Diflucan in minimal doses. During the antifungal therapy, it is recommended that pregnant women regularly have estrogen tests.

Patients with renal disease or potentially proarrhythmic conditions may need a reduction in the daily dose of Diflucan. During the course of this antimycotic, they are recommended to have regular heart or kidney function tests.

Because of the risk of hepatic side effects, patients with liver disease are advised to take low doses of Diflucan. Frequent adverse events of this antifungal are nausea, headache, vomiting, diarrhoea and abdominal pain.

The results of clinical studies show that the risk of Diflucan adverse reactions is significantly higher in low immunity than that in a healthy immune system. In immunocompromised persons, it can cause cutaneous side effects:

  • acute skin rash
  • bullous drug eruptions
  • toxic epidermal necrolysis
  • erythema multiforme major

If you have further questions about the benefits or disadvantages of this antifungal drug, ask your pharmacist. If you order this antimycotic online, check with a pharmacist in chat.

Diflucan is sold in many countries, including the UK, Canada, and the USA. In some European countries, you can buy its generics, which are produced under the brands Fungata, Fungustatin or Triflucan.

To save your money you can use patient assistance programs, to buy Diflucan at good price. As an alternative to insurance programs, you can order Diflucan at a discounted price in an online pharmacy.

The size of the discount will depend on the total amount of Diflucan doses that you buy. When buying the largest Diflucan package, you will be able to get the maximum discount and thus reduce the costs of treatment and prevention of fungal infections.
